About Us
Most people find us in the middle of the worst month they have had, after learning that a facility is not going to explain anything to them. There are two ways forward. Which one is right depends on your situation, not on what is convenient for us.
No upfront cost for a case review
When the harm is serious enough that a lawyer should take it on. We work with attorneys who handle deaths in custody, serious injuries, excessive force, and denial of medical care, and we can put your situation in front of one of them for a case review. There is no upfront cost for a review through our attorney network.
Request a case reviewProfessional document preparation
When you are handling the case yourself. We prepare the documents, support the research, track the deadlines, and organize the file — under the oversight of a licensed attorney. You make every decision; we make sure the paperwork carrying your case is not the reason it fails.
Get document helpWhich one is you
Most people are not, and you are not expected to be. That is what the first conversation is for.
Broadly: if someone died, or was seriously hurt, or was denied care until real harm followed, that is usually a situation where an attorney should look at it. If your loved one is representing themselves — a grievance appeal, a postconviction motion, a civil rights complaint they intend to file on their own — that is the Pro Se Plan.
If you cannot tell, start with the case review request and choose "Not Sure — Please Advise." That option exists for exactly this.

Our limits, plainly
Prisoner Legal Aid LLC is a legal document preparation and legal research support company. We prepare documents, support research, organize cases, and connect families with independent licensed attorneys.
We are not a law firm. We are not attorneys.
That is not a technicality, so here is what it means for you:
Attorneys we work with are independent. They are not our employees, they decide for themselves whether to take a matter, and an attorney-client relationship begins only when that attorney signs a written agreement with you. You are free to consult any attorney you choose.
What we do is make the process navigable, and make sure the paperwork does its job.
Who we work with
We work with people in county jails, state prisons, federal facilities, and immigration detention. The rules differ in each, and knowing which set applies to your situation is part of the first conversation.
You can learn more about how attorney relationships and document services are structured in our Legal Disclosures, and how we handle your information in our Privacy Policy.
The earliest days of custody are when records still exist, deadlines have not yet run, and a family can do the most good — and they are also when nobody tells you any of that. Our free guide The First 72 Hours: What Families Need to Know walks through what happens at booking, intake screening, and classification, and what you can do from the outside at each step. No charge and no obligation.
